Glorious Sand Dunes

Glorious Sand Dunes

Who knew Lake Michigan had sand dunes?  Well, I sure didn’t and I also had no idea sand dunes could be as big, tall and steep as they are.  This picture has some black dots on it.  If you enlarge the picture you will see those black dots are people who have made their way down the dune to the water.  The sand is soft so the going down is difficult and the coming up is even more difficult.  I don’t know how many miles of sand dunes there are but it’s impressive.  And did you know that the waters of Lake Michigan look just like the pictures of the waters in the Caribbean?  Thank goodness folks had the foresight to declare these lands the Sleeping Bear National Park.  It was a glorious sight declaring the glory of God in creation!

As we explored the park, we’d stop at all the points of interest and read the info signs posted along the way.  However, the more I read, the sadder I became.  Why?  Because God was not getting any glory. One sign read:

“These inland dunes reflect previous dune-forming conditions. These dunes are a result of massive ice sheets that covered Michigan, and much of North America, during what geologists call the Pleistocene Epoch, some 1,800,000 years ago. Glaciers transported sand and other materials and deposited them as glacial drift.”

I looked down at that sign and then I looked up at the huge expanse of the dunes and the water and my mind went to the great flood as recorded in Genesis. Waters rising, covering and destroying the earth and all upon it. Well, except for Noah, his family and animals enclosed in the Ark. I remembered from reading Genesis that the high mountains were covered in 22 feet of water. Woah! Imagine if a drone could have captured the entire earth covered in water. I also remembered reading how God opened the floodgates of the sky and the fountains of the great deep burst open and for 40 days and nights and the water prevailed on the earth 150 days. What’s my point? Y’all, this is a massive amount of water coming down on earth in a relatively short period of time and it’s further recorded that all this water remained for 5 months.

My mind went to pictures I’d seen on TV of recent floods where the water was so powerful it was sweeping everything in its path up and away. The current of water so strong it carved out the earth as it went taking buildings, homes, cars, animals and even people.. And when the floodwater receded…oh my. Can you even imagine waters remaining at flood stage for 5 months before receding?

Yes, giant sand dunes sent my mind in all these directions and it made me sad to think that everyone was being told this happened some 1,800,000 years ago and that God had nothing to do with it. The truth is, some 4300+ years ago, the sinfulness of man was great on the earth and the intent of the thoughts of man’s heart was only evil continually. And you know what? God was grieved in His heart. He brought about a “flood, destroyed all flesh in which is the breath of life, from under heaven, everything that is on the earth perished”…except for Noah, his family and the creatures on the Ark…and on the account of history goes. God has everything to do with everything and it’s all recorded in His book, the Bible.

Please, go read the Book, His Book - the Bible. It’s glorious in its truth about our glorious God! You are not a spec on the giant sand dune of life. You are precious in His sight and He wants to lavish His grace upon you through His Son, Jesus Christ.
