If a donkey could talk

Our church is reading through the New Testament together. This morning I was reading in Luke 19 where Jesus instructed the disciples to “Go into that village over there….As you enter it, you will see a young donkey tied there that no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks, ‘Why are you untying that colt?’ just say, ‘The Lord needs it.’” As soon as I read these words, I remembered this picture I captured only a few weeks ago of these two cuties.

Today as I look at these sweet donkey faces, my mind wanders back to that day Jesus needed that young donkey to carry him into and through the streets of Jerusalem. Wow…if a donkey could talk. Well, I guess in some ways that donkey did talk for the testimony of his service to our Lord is recorded in God’s book.

Carrying his Creator over the clothing thrown on the ground in honor of Jesus, that donkey heard the shouts and songs of praise. I wonder if the heart of that donkey was filled with honor and praise and if his chest expanded making him grow a little taller? A profound moment in time. Yet, only a few moments later, as Jesus sees the city, He begins to weep. According to some word study definitions, it was a wailing kind of weeping. Sobbing, if you will. Why? Because Jesus, the Messiah was right there in their midst…come to save them from their sins and yet so, so many missed it. Jesus, the Savior…salvation…was right there in their very midst but they didn’t see. How sad. I wonder if the heart of that donkey sank as he heard the wails of His Creator and our Savior?

You know what? Jesus is in our midst too. Right here and right now.

Don't miss your moment with Jesus.

Oh, this moment calls for preaching of the gospel to my soul and as my soul receives, it sings…

“There is a truth older than the ages
There is a promise of things yet to come
There is one born for our salvation
Jesus
There is a light that overwhelms the darkness
There is a kingdom that forever reigns
There is freedom from the chains that bind us
Jesus, Jesus
Who walks on the waters
Who speaks to the sea
Who stands in the fire beside me
He roars like a lion
He bled as the Lamb
He carries my healing in His hands
Jesus
There is a name I call in times of trouble
There is a song that comforts in the night
There is a voice that calms the storm that rages
He is Jesus, Jesus
Who walks on the waters
Who speaks to the sea
Who stands in the fire beside me
He roars like a lion
He bled as the Lamb
He carries my healing in His hands
Messiah”
My Savior…
