Engagement ring
Every now and then I click on Facebook Marketplace and notice how many engagement and wedding rings are for sale. I can’t help but think many of them represent broken relationships. A ring is meant to symbolize forever—“you are the one above all others.” When it’s removed, it often marks heartbreak and shattered dreams.
But here’s the beautiful contrast.
Did you know that for believers, the Holy Spirit is our engagement ring?
Ephesians 1:13–14 tells us that when we believe in Christ, we are sealed with the Holy Spirit, who is given as a pledge of our inheritance.
That word pledge comes from the Greek arrabōn, meaning a deposit, guarantee, or down payment. It is not merely symbolic—it is real and binding. In the ancient world (and even today), an arrabōn was like an engagement pledge or ring.
Let that sink in.
When we surrender our lives to Christ, God gives us His Holy Spirit as His guarantee. God never breaks His promises. He never removes His ring. Our forever relationship with Him is sealed.
He is the One for us.
And He is the only sure thing in this life.
