Jesus take the wheel

Hey, if you ever find yourself in Detroit, make sure you visit the Henry Ford. It’s amazing!

As we wandered through the old car section, we happened upon this 1955 Chevy and seeing it, I “had a moment.” Oh my goodness, the memories and emotions filled my heart and I had just couldn’t even move for a moment. This was just like my mother’s first car! I texted my sister who reminded me that daddy had bought her this car as a post-hysterectomy and 10 wedding anniversary present. So, my mother would have been 35 years old with her first car, having never driven! She went to driving school and away she went…taking my sister and me everywhere with her. My mother was a spunky, spirited trail-blazer who, driving around in her new car, was a young, growing Christian.

This second picture was taken while she was driving. I’m confident it was taken by my daddy who referred to my mother as the love of his life but who also loved her legs. In fact, he once ran over a curb in our church parking lot because he looking at the pretty legs of a woman. Fortunately, that woman turned out to be my mother (it was one of those Sunday’s where they needed to go in separate cars.) Anyway, here is my mother sitting behind the wheel of her beautiful grey and pink ‘55 Chevy, slip showing, hands on the wheel, and legs going (it was a standard). It’s a sight I remember well and a beautiful picture of pretty and powerful…that’s my momma.

I realize now my mother's power was a result of having the Holy Spirit. I used to think she must have had eyes in the back of her head but no...it's was wisdom from above and Holy Spirit power from within. You all know the passage from Ephesians that says God "is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think." We all love that one and I do too, but thinking about my mother reminds me that this verse goes on to say "according to the power that works in us." Do you see it? All that exceedingly, abundantly above all we ask or think...is according to the power that works in US. Woah!

I saw this principle and truth about God's power at work in my mother's life and it was a beautiful adventure with the Lord. Sometimes those adventures were hard and she suffered and sometimes they were glorious. But all were exceedingly abundantly above what she could ask or think.

Happy Sunday! Be encouraged. Let Jesus take the wheel!
